Is Buzzfeed Real Journalism?

Buzzfeed is considered to be a popular main stream form of online journalism that many people (both people interested in the news and those that only occasionally peruse articles about the current trending events) have encountered. But Buzzfeed's immature reporting style, comical design and sometimes irrelevant article topics draw to question: is Buzzfeed credible news?

Now when I want to judge the credibility of something, I consider whether I would cite evidence from it (in this case, Buzzfeed) in an intellectual debate or essay for class. I wouldn't. But does that make Buzzfeed any less of a worthy news source.

Aspiring journalists and journalism veterans have all acknowledged that Buzzfeed is gaining popularity and is considered to be the journalism of the future. But since it is catered to social media, it loses a lot of its credibility. Buzzfeed is the new Wikipedia: well meaning but too much of a risk to credit.

I guess that the main reason for the mockery towards Buzzfeed comes from its nonsensical quizzes. I admit that I have wasted multiple hours that I could used to study for math to take quizzes to find out which Kardashian I am. But they do take away from the sophistication of Buzzfeed as they really hold no informative value.

But Buzzfeed has mastered the art of relevant news. It is up to date and you can be sure that Buzzfeed will report on things within a timely manner. This is something many news sources have yet to master.

And can we please applaud Buzzfeed for its incredible investigative stories? They are in depth and engaging and worthwhile. They are everything that I could have hoped for.

But then again, Buzzfeed tends to be a little opinionated. And while I agree with the liberal views of many of their writers, I suppose it's a bit biased.

Final verdict: depends on the article and section. Nonetheless, if all you hope to gain is a basic understanding of certain topics, Buzzfeed is a great source to check up, however; before citing it or basing your opinion of it, double check with other sources.

What journalism is is a very abstract concept. No on gets to determine what qualifies as good reporting. The main point of journalism is to inform the public and if the source does that, it technically is news.

In my opinion, Buzzfeed is real journalism. Maybe not in the typical sense of the word but it upholds the ethics of journalism making it a worthy news source.

Let me know your opinions as I would love to hear them.

Why Mindy Kaling is an Incredible Role Model

Mindy Kaling is, without a doubt, a force to be reckoned with. She has envious amounts of confidence, brains and kindness. Growing up and looking at the media, I always felt like I couldn't fit in and I didn't look like everyone else but then actresses like Mindy Kaling brought a touch of hope to me. I started thinking that maybe if you work hard enough, it didn't matter what you looked like. I might not look like every other journalist but that shouldn't discourage me from following me dreams.

I'm sure Mindy Kaling, just like every other woman, has her flaws but her strengths are worth recognizing. Here are some reasons why Mindy Kaling is an incredible role model:

1) She's got killer style.

Just look at her! Not only is she wearing an amazing dress (and rocking the crop top), but also wearing it with confidence and grace.

2) She always speaks her mind uncensored.

No matter what, I can count on Mindy to add her two cents to everything that she feels passionately about. This is a quality that I'm afraid to have (but want to adopt) since I'm always worried about what people would think of some of my opinions. "Am I being too pushy about supporting feminism? Is there even such a thing as supporting feminism too much?"

3) She knows what she stands for.

She is an outspoken supporter of women's rights and teaches girls to love themselves no matter where they come from and what they look like. She encourages women of all ages to love who they are and I find this super admirable.

4) She proves that you can have brains and beauty.

Not only is she completely gorgeous, but she is also super intelligent. You can probably tell just how smart she is by the way she carries herself and her articulation but she's got her degree in playwriting from Dartmouth.

5) She's an accomplished author with a lot of important things to say.

She came out with her first book a while ago and I am super excited to see what else she has to say. Her writing is honest and very relatable. I hope to read her second book Why Not Me? hopefully later this year.

6) She craftily sidesteps setbacks.

I'm sure if you are a big Mindy Project fan, you probably have already heard that the show has been canceled. But cross your fingers, Hulu might pick it up. And throughout it all, Mindy has kept a pretty level head and has been optimistic about the deal with Hulu. She said that the characters' stories were not over yet.

7) She proves that Indian-American girls can do anything they set their minds to.

There are so few Asian in American media and that can be pretty frustrating but congrats to her for proving that ambition is really the only thing you need to be successful. As an aspiring journalist, it's hard not to see that there aren't many Indian-American journalists in America. Thanks to Mindy Kaling, at least I have much more hope following my dreams.

I guess what I'm trying to say with this post is that: Thanks Mindy Kaling for helping me (and many other Indian-Americans) feel like there is a place for them too. Let's be honest, who doesn't want to be best friends with her? Comment letting me know what you think about The Mindy Project and its end.

Books that are Becoming Movies Soon

I hate watching movies to only realize that they were previously introduced as books. I prefer reading the novels THEN watching the movies. To give myself (and anyone else) a head start on some reading before the movies are released, I have compiled a list of some of the most anticipated movies of 2015-2016.

Paper Towns by John Green

I'm pretty sure most people are already anxiously waiting for this movie to come out but I still thought that it was worth mentioning. If you haven't yet read the book, you probably should. The previous John Green movie adaptation, The Fault in Our Stars, stayed pretty authentic to the original book but who knows what this film will be like? Although the casting is absolutely perfect, I'm nervous to see what scenes are cut out and how the characters work with each other. It comes out this summer in July 2015.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith

I have been eyeing this book for the past two or so years and I am disappointed in myself for not getting it sooner. In my experience, parodies of classic novels can either be terrible or wonderful. Since this is becoming a movie, hopefully this will be a good one. But I would still much rather read the book than possibly waste time and money at the movies. You still have time to read this book because the movie comes out in February 2016.

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Yet another novel I hate to admit I have not yet read. This too was recommended to me a few years ago but I was unfortunately stupid enough to reject it. And now here it is with its own movie. I thought it looked creepy and thought that it "couldn't possibly stir the YA world." But it did and now I need to read it before the movie comes out to see all the hype. There's still a little bit of time left to read this book as the movie comes out in March 2016.

The Scorch Trials by James Dashner

I absolutely fell in love with the first movie and I kinda want to know what happens next. I am currently reading so many series at one time that I hate to say that this series has taken a step back in urgency to read. Since I do NOT want anything to be spoiled for me, this book will have to be read. It comes out in September 2015.

I hope some of you now want to check out these books before they release to the theaters. Let me know which of this I should read or should not so I can clean out my "Must Read" list. Tell me what movies you're looking forward to!
